A record crowd attended the 2014 Candidates Forum, sponsored by the Burke Chamber, on October 21. More than 100 citizens gathered in the Leviton Auditorium at Western Piedmont Community College. Chamber Board Chairman Scott Mulwee served as the moderator, as candidates for the NC House and Senate, Burke County Commission and Burke County Sheriff fielded questions and recapped their platforms. Early voting in Burke County started on October 23.Election Day will be Tuesday, November 4.
The December Business for Breakfast will continue a Burke Chamber tradition with a focus on the economy in the year ahead. The speaker will be Michael J. Skordeles, Senior Vice President of the Investment Advisory Group of Sun Trust Banks, Inc. The breakfast program will be held on Friday, December 5, at 8 am in the Ervin Community Room at Grace Ridge Retirement Community. Additional details will be announced in the weeks ahead. Skordeles recently joined the Investment Advisory Group as a Market Strategist, providing specialized research, equity portfolio analysis, investment strategies and expert commentary. With 19 years of investment experience, he came to Sun Trust from Morgan Keenan, where he was a Managing Director and Market Strategist, writing extensively about the markets and the economy and helping manage a $1.6 billion portfolio. He previously served with McDonald Investments, Key Corp and The Prudential. He is the co-founder and past president of the Mid-South Association for Business Economics in Memphis, TN.
Under a Monte Carlo casino theme, more than 50 businesses and 800 people attended the Chamber’s first Business Showcase last year, making it the single most successful event of 2013. This year’s expo on Thursday, November 13, will be even bigger and better, as an A-List of Burke County businesses display their products and services under a Hollywood theme. The venue will again be the National Guard Armory in Morganton where a red carpet, paparazzi, a photo booth and plenty of glitz and glitter will greet star watchers from across the community. Area businesses are invited to the Showcase from 3-5 pm, with doors open to the community from 5-7 pm for a $3 admission. Participating business reps are encouraged to adopt the Hollywood theme into their displays and attire. The most creative will win a free booth for the 2015 Business Showcase and a gift certificate for $150 in Chamber services, a total value of $300. The next two favorites among the judges will win a free booth for next year’s expo. Booths are expected to sell out quickly, so reserve your place today by calling Stacey Ripley at the Chamber at 437-3021. Booths are $150 each.
If your company would like to be a hole sponsor at the 19th Annual Chamber Golf Classic on September 25 at Silver Creek, please call the Chamber and reserve your hole. Hole sponsorships are just $175.00, and each sponsor has the opportunity to man the hole and provide information on their products or services to the 96 golfers playing the course. To be a hole sponsor, please call Dorothea Jolly or Stacey Ripley at the Chamber at 437-3021. We want to express sincere thanks to our players, sponsors and donors for the response to this year’s golf event. The field of players filled up very quickly, hole sponsorships were claimed early and the items donated for the prize packages and raffle will make for an exciting 19th hole at the Silver Creek club house to cap the day.
